Climate chart - San Martin
San Martín is a city of 80,000 inhabitants located in the center-north of Argentina, about 25 km (15 mi) southeast of Mendoza, at 33 degrees south latitude and 660 meters (2,165 feet) above sea level.
The climate of San Martín is temperate arid, influenced by the altitude, with mild, dry winters (but during which it can be cold at night), and hot, quite rainy summers. In summer, rainfall (which is generally not abundant) often occurs in the form of thunderstorms.
The climate is similar to that of Mendoza, although it is slightly less hot in summer.
Despite the altitude, in summer, from December to February (and sometimes also in spring, in October and November), there can be heat waves, in which the temperature can reach or exceed 40 °C (104 °F). In January 2003, it reached 42.7 °C (108.9 °F).
Even in summer, however, there can be outbursts of cool air from the south, perhaps accompanied by a thunderstorm, which can greatly lower the temperature for two or three days, so much so that at night it can be very cool even in midsummer.
Since winter is dry, snow in San Martín is rare, however, it can occur from time to time.
On the other hand, night frosts are quite frequent. In July 1965 the temperature dropped to -9.4 °C (15 °F).
On the other hand, the wind that comes down from the mountains, called Zonda and similar to the Föhn and the Chinook, is able to raise the temperature by several degrees, it is no coincidence that the heat records are around 30 °C (86 °F) even in winter.
