Average weather, temperature, rainfall, sunshine hours
The climate of San Julián (or Puerto San Julián) is
temperate arid (according to the Köppen classification, cold semi-arid or steppe climate - BSk), with quite cold winters (from June to August) and mild summers (from December to February).
The town is located in southern Argentina, in the province of Santa Cruz, inside a natural harbor near the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, at 49 degrees south latitude.
Due to the westerlies, which prevail all year round and descend from the Andes, the climate is particularly arid, but also milder than the latitude might suggest. However, there may be temperature changes due to cold winds from the south, of Antarctic origin, or warm winds from the northwest.
In addition, the
wind, which blows all year round, often moderate or strong, increases the feeling of cold.
The Andes, which at this latitude are covered with glaciers and surrounded by lakes, are located about 360 km (225 mi) to the west. The highest peaks in the area are Mount Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre.
Since the
winter is quite dry, snowfall is rare and not abundant. Also, since the city is located on the coast, cold air does not settle easily on the ground, and during the day the temperature usually exceeds freezing, except during the most intense cold waves. The record is -13.8 °C (7.1 °F), set in late June 1964.
Although the
summer is not hot, there can sometimes be short heat waves. However, since the sea is cold even in summer, the temperature usually drops a lot in the evening due to the breeze. From December to March the temperature can exceed 35 °C (95 °F). The record is 37.5 °C (99.5 °F), set in January 2008.
When the wind blows from the south, it can get cold even in summer, so much so that the cold records are below freezing in all months.
Best Time
The mildest time in Puerto San Julián is the summer, from December to February. However, since it can sometimes get very hot (albeit rarely and for short periods), you can choose November, a spring month. It is worth remembering that at night, it can get cold also in these months.
