Climate chart - Puerto Iguazu
The climate of Puerto Iguazú is subtropical, with very mild winters and very hot summers.
The rains are abundant and there is no dry season, however, they are a little more abundant in spring and autumn, and a little less in the austral winter. In fact, from June to August there are long periods without rain, of a week or two, although it depends on the years.
Although the winter is generally mild, it can sometimes get cold, especially at night. In July 1975 the temperature dropped to -4 °C (25 °F). In July 2016 there was a day with a maximum of 10 °C (50 °F).
In summer, from December to March, it can get very hot, and the temperature can reach 38/39 °C (100/102 °F). In January 2022 it reached 40.6 °C (105.1 °F), and the average high was 36.2 °C (97.1 °F).
The city is located in the extreme north-east of Argentina, at 170 meters (560 feet) above sea level, in the province of Misiones, on the border with Paraguay and Brazil.

Puerto Iguazú

Nearby are the famous Iguazu Falls. They are the largest waterfalls in the world (although not the ones with the greatest flow), and are formed by the Iguazú River, which originates in Brazil, then heads southwest and marks the border between Brazil and Argentina. Hence, the falls can be observed from both the Argentinian and the Brazilian sides.
Further on, about 20 km (12 mi) west of the falls, near the three twin cities, Ciudad del Este (Paraguay), Foz do Iguaçu (Brazil) and Puerto Iguazú (Argentina), the Iguazú flows into the Paraná River.
The highest flow of the falls is recorded in what is the wettest period in the Iguazú River basin, that is, from November to March, while the lowest flow is recorded from August to October.

Best Time

The best time to visit Puerto Iguazú is from June to August, being the coolest and driest of the year. Sometimes it can also get cold, so it's better to bring some warm clothes.
Iguazu Falls are most crowded with visitors in January and February, the period of summer holidays in South America, during Easter week, and during the winter holidays (usually in the second half of July).
In the hottest period, from December to February, there is sultry heat and many mosquitoes, and the rains are more abundant, but the days are a little longer and there is a good number of hours of sunshine. In addition, since it is hot, there is no problem if you get wet from rain or spray. Plus, the falls are more spectacular. However, sometimes the rains can create problems and make some trails, as well as the island of San Martín, inaccessible. In addition, it can sometimes get very hot, even 38/40 °C (100/104 °F).
You can then choose the month of April, in which conditions are intermediate between winter and summer, avoiding the week of Easter, and bearing in mind that the weather depends on the years.
