The climate of Mar del Plata is
temperate oceanic (according to the Köppen classification, oceanic climate - Cfb), with mild winters and warm summers, and no dry season.
The city is located on the Atlantic coast of Argentina, on the 38th parallel south.
Even though it is located on the coast, the city is exposed both to outbreaks of cold air of Antarctic origin and to invasions of hot air of tropical origin, therefore it is subject to sudden
changes in temperature.
The sun shines for a good number of hours, especially in summer, when it shines 60/63% of the time.
In
summer, from December to February, average temperatures suggest pleasant weather, however, it can sometimes get cold at night, while in other circumstances there can be heat waves. In January 2022, the heat record was broken with 42.4 °C (108.3 °F). In any case, the wind blows frequently, moreover, the sea is not warm.
In
winter, from June to August, fog can sometimes form. Snow is rare, but at night the temperature can drop below freezing. In July 1988 it dropped to -9.3 °C (15.3 °F).
The waves of bad weather, with rain, wind and rough sea, are brought by the winds from the south-east, and for this reason are called
sudestadas.
Best Time
It is difficult to find the best time to visit Mar del Plata, as there is no dry season, and there can be sudden changes in temperature.
The
summer, from December to February, is the warmest and sunniest season, but the rains are more abundant. The sea is quite cold even in this season, although it is warmer than in the other months. Sometimes it can get cold even in summer, especially at night.
On other occasions, however, there may be heat waves, even though the temperature exceeds 36 °C (97 °F) quite rarely.
Alternatively, you can choose the
shoulder seasons, March-April and October-November.
