Average weather, temperature, rainfall, sunshine hours

The climate of Maquinchao is
temperate arid, with cold winters and warm summers during the day, but with very cool or cold nights. The
wind blows frequently.
The village, considered the "capital of wool", is located in Argentina, in the province of Río Negro, at 41 degrees south latitude and at 900 meters (2,950 feet) above sea level.
We are in the northern part of Patagonia, the one occupied by a plateau, where the altitude exceeds 1,000 meters (3,300 ft) in a fairly large area, reaching a maximum of 1,700 meters (5,600 ft).
Due to the altitude and distance from the sea, temperatures can reach particularly low values. The cold records are below freezing even in summer.
In addition, in
winter, from December to February, particularly intense cold waves are possible, during which the temperature can drop below -20 °C (-4 °F). In late June 1984, it dropped to -25.6 °C (-14.1 °F), while in July 1991 it even dropped to -35 °C (-31 °F), which is the lowest value ever recorded in Argentina and in all of South America (at least below 1,000 meters). After 2000, the temperature dropped to -23 °C (-9.5 °F) in July 2001. After 2020, so far it has dropped to -19.9 °C (-3.8 °F) in July 2022.
In
summer, from December to February, there is a strong temperature range between night and day. At night it can get cold, while during heatwaves, during the day the temperature can reach or exceed 35 °C (95 °F). In January 2021 and 2023 it reached 39 °C (102 °F).
Best Time
The best time to visit Maquinchao and the Patagonian plateau is from November to March, as it is the mildest of the year. Remember that it can get cold at night even during this period, while it can get very hot during the day.
Compared to the real summer period, which is from December to February, in November and March it is easier to have cold nights, but more difficult to experience hot days.
