The climate of La Rioja is
subtropical semi-arid (according to the Köppen classification, semi-arid hot climate - BSh), with dry, mild winters (but during which it can get cold at night), and very hot, quite rainy summers. In summer, the rains often occur in the form of thunderstorms.
The city (formerly known as "
Ciudad de Todos los Santos de Nueva Rioja"), capital of the province of La Rioja, is located in northern Argentina, at 29 degrees south latitude, at 500 meters above sea level, and at the foot of the Andes.
In particular, the
Sierra de Velasco, in turn belonging to the Sierras Pampeanas, separates the city of La Rioja from the Chilecito Valley. Even further west, about 100 km away, is the closest very high peak, the
Nevado de Famatina (or Cerro General Belgrano), 6,115 meters high. In the Andes to the west of La Rioja the climate is semi-arid, however, in summer there can be some rain (and snow in the high mountains).
In
winter, from mid-May to mid-August, the difference in temperature between night and day is often significant. In addition, although the winter is mild, there can sometimes be outbreaks of cold air from the south, during which the temperature can drop below freezing at night. This usually happens from late May to early September. The absolute record is -7.2 °C (19 °F), recorded in August 1966, while after 1991, the temperature dropped to -6.5 °C (20.3 °F) in July 2000.
Snow in La Rioja is very rare, both because the winter is dry and because the sun usually warms the ground and raises the temperature a lot during the day. However, on July 16 and 17, 2010, there was a snowfall that produced a light layer, and on the second day the maximum temperature was only 3 °C (37.5 °F).
Summer, from December to February, is very hot, in fact La Rioja is one of the few Argentine cities where the average maximum in December and January exceeds 35 °C (95 °F). Although it is the rainiest season, in no month does it exceed 100 millimeters (4 inches) on average.
During the day it can get
hot all year round, in fact, the heat records exceed 30 °C (86 °F) even in winter.
Especially in spring and summer, there can be
heat waves, during which the temperature can reach and exceed 40 °C (104 °F). In the worst moments the temperature can reach 45 °C (113 °F). The record is 46.4 °C, set in late December 1971. In December 1995, the temperature reached 46 °C, while in December 2013 the average maximum was 39 °C.
Best Time
It is difficult to find the best time to visit La Rioja, since the summer is very hot, while in winter there can be sudden changes in temperature, and at night there can be quite intense frosts. You can then choose the period
from mid-April to mid-May, in autumn, when the temperature is halfway between winter and summer. In spring it can get very hot.
