Climate chart - La Plata
La Plata is a city of 900,000 inhabitants located in Argentina, a short distance from Buenos Aires, of which it is the capital province, near the coast of the Río de la Plata estuary.
The climate is similar to that of Buenos Aires, that is, subtropical.
Compared to the inland areas of the Pampas, the ocean tempers the climate a bit, however, here too, there can be temperature swings.
Winter, from June to August, is mild, however, it can get cold at night. Sometimes fog can form. During cold spells, the temperature can drop a few degrees below freezing, at least at night. The record is -5.7 °C (21.7 °F), set in June 1967. However, snow is very rare.
Summer, from December to February, is warm and sunny, though not as hot as in Buenos Aires. Thunderstorms are quite frequent. There can be heat waves, during which the temperature can reach 38/40 °C (100/104 °F). In January 2022 it reached 41 °C (105.8 °F). On other occasions, it can get very cool, or even a little cold, at night.
