Average weather, temperature, rainfall, sunshine hours
The climate of Esquel is
sub-oceanic (according to the Köppen classification, Mediterranean climate with mild summers - Csb), with cold winters, sometimes freezing and snowy, and mild, sunny summers.
The city is located in Argentina, in the western part of Patagonia, in the province of Chubut, at almost 43 degrees south latitude, at 560 meters (1,835 feet) above sea level, and at the foot of the Andes. Nearby is the
La Hoya ski resort, with mountains that exceed 2,000 meters (6,500 ft), while further west is the
Los Alerces National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a very humid area, characterized by forests, lakes and glaciers.
The
wind blows often, and is more intense in spring and summer, from October to February. The wind coming down from the mountains can cause temperature rises, with highs above 15 °C (59 °F) even in winter.
In winter there can be
cold spells, during which the temperature can drop to -10 °C (14 °F) or even below.
At night it can get cold even in summer, in fact, from December to February the temperature can sometimes drop to around freezing.
The rains and snowfalls are due to the proximity to the mountains, where the humidity coming from the Pacific Ocean is discharged after crossing Chile, in fact to the east of the city there is the Patagonian desert plateau.
In summer there can be
hot periods, during which the temperature reaches or exceeds 30 °C (86 °F). The records from December to February are about 34/35 °C (93/95 °F). However, even in these cases, at night the temperature drops significantly.
Best Time
The best time to visit Esquel is the summer, from December to February, as it is the mildest and driest of the year. Remember that at night it can get cold even in this period.
For a ski holiday in La Hoya, the season normally runs from July to September. Depending on how much snow has fallen, during some years you can ski until mid-October.
The weather data is taken from the aerodrome, which is located east of the city, at 800 meters (2,600 ft) above sea level, and therefore has slightly lower temperatures, and probably also less precipitation (since it is located east of the mountains).
