Average weather, temperature, rainfall, sunshine hours
The climate of Buenos Aires is
subtropical, with mild winters and hot summers. The temperatures are those of the Mediterranean climate, but the rains follow a different pattern, since winter is not very rainy, while summer is the rainiest season (although this happens mainly due to afternoon thunderstorms, which do not reduce the hours of sunshine by much).
Buenos Aires is the capital of Argentina and is located in the north-central part of the country, on the banks of the River Plate (Río de la Plata), the estuary of the Uruguay and Paraná rivers which, after meeting, widen towards the sea.
Winter, from June to August, is mild, with alternating periods of sunshine and bad weather. In periods of stable weather, fog can sometimes form.
Sometimes, the north wind can bring warm days, with highs of 25 °C (77 °F) and more, even in the dead of winter.
Very cold days are rare, however, the south wind, the Pampero, can bring slightly cold periods, with highs of 10 °C (50 °F) or less. On the coldest nights of the year, the temperature typically drops to around 0 °C (32 °F) in the historic districts overlooking the sea, while it drops to -3/-4 °C (25/27 °F) in the southwestern suburbs, where the airport is also located.
Snow in Buenos Aires is extremely rare. In July 2007 there was a snowfall, not abundant but with a slight accumulation, as it had not happened since 1918.
Summer, from December to February, is hot, with humid and unpleasant periods, which generally last a few days, interrupted by the arrival of cooler winds from the south, which can bring thunderstorms, sometimes intense, and a sharp drop in temperatures.
On the hottest days of the year, the temperature typically reaches 37/38 °C (97/100 °F). During the Christmas and New Year period of 2013-2014, there was a particularly intense heat wave, with a maximum of 39 °C (102 °F), and above all with high humidity and high temperatures even at night (the highest minimum was 26 °C or 79 °F at the observatory and 28 °C or 82 °F at the aerodrome, by the sea). In January 2022, the temperature exceeded 40 °C (104 °F) for four days, and reached 41.5 °C (106.5 °F) at the observatory, with a minimum of 30 °C (86 °F), the highest value since January 1957, when it had reached 43.3 °C (110 °F).
The
sea near Buenos Aires is not very warm, however, it can be considered warm enough for swimming from January through March.
Spring and autumn, from September to November and from March to May, are mild but contrasted seasons, with fairly frequent and sometimes abundant rains.
In particular, floods can occasionally occur as a result of particularly heavy rains, especially in autumn, as occurred on May 31, 1985 (when 300 mm or 12 inches of rain fell in one day) and on April 2, 2013.
However, there are also periods of sunshine and good weather.
Best Time
To visit Buenos Aires you can choose spring and autumn (in particular, the months of October-November and March-April), with a preference for spring, even though they are quite rainy seasons. In November, you can admire the purple flowering of Jacaranda trees.
Those who can stand the heat can also choose summer. However, winter is not a prohibitive season, and as mentioned, it is rare for it to be very cold.
Even in the height of summer, it is advisable to bring a sweatshirt for cooler evenings.
