Average weather, temperature, rainfall, sunshine hours
The climate of San Carlos de Bariloche is
sub-oceanic (according to the Köppen classification, warm-summer Mediterranean climate - Csb), with cold winters, sometimes freezing and snowy, and mild and sunny summers.
The city is located in south-central Argentina, at the 41st parallel south, at 850 meters (2,800 feet) above sea level, at the foot of the Andes, and on the shores of a lake of glacial origin, Lake Nahuel Huapi. Nearby are other smaller lakes, such as Lake Gutiérrez and Lake Mascardi.
Nearby are mountains exceeding 2,000 meters, including the
Cerro Catedral, 2,100 meters (6,890 feet) high, where a famous ski resort is located. Further west, on the border with Chile, is Cerro Tronador, which exceeds 3,000 meters (9,800 feet).
The
wind blows often, and is more intense in spring and summer, from October to February. The wind coming down from the mountains can cause temperature rises, with highs above 15 °C (59 °F) even in winter.
In winter there can be
cold spells, during which the temperature can drop to -10 °C (14 °F) or even below. In July 2017, it dropped to -25.4 °C (-13.7 °F).
At night it can get cold even in summer, in fact, from December to February the temperature can sometimes drop to freezing or slightly below.
On average, around 120 cm (47 in) of
snow fall per year. It usually snows from May to October.
The rains and snowfalls are due to the proximity to the mountains, where the humidity coming from the Pacific Ocean is discharged after crossing Chile, in fact to the east of the city there is the Patagonian desert plateau.
In summer there can be
hot periods, during which the temperature reaches or exceeds 30 °C (86 °F). The records from December to March are about 34/35 °C (93/95 °F). However, even in these cases, at night the temperature drops significantly.
