The climate of Mécheria is arid subtropical, with mild winters (but with possible cold periods) and very hot, sunny summers.
The city is located in northwestern Algeria, at 1,150 meters (3,770 feet) above sea level.
In winter there may be snowfall and frost. In January 2005, during a cold wave that brought snowfall to unusual parts of the desert, the temperature dropped to -14 °C (7 °F), which is the coldest record for Algeria.
