The climate of In Amenas is subtropical desert, with very mild winters (but during which it can get cold at night) and very hot, sunny summers.
The small town is located in eastern Algeria, near the border with Libya, at 28 degrees north latitude and at an altitude of 550 meters (1,800 feet).
In winter, it can get cold at night, and sometimes the temperature can slightly drop below freezing. In January 2005 there was even a snowfall.
In summer, temperatures are very high, however, both due to the altitude and the proximity to Libya (which often receives currents from the north), they remain at lower values than in other areas of the Algerian desert. However, in the worst moments they can reach 46/47 °C (115/117 °F).
