Climate in Gjirokaster (Albania)

Gjirokastër is a city located in southern Albania, about 25 km (15 mi) away from the coast, but east of the Mali i Gjerë mountains, which isolate it from the sea, making the climate a little more continental than the Mediterranean one on the coast.
The airport, where the weather station is located, is at 195 meters (640 ft) above sea level, but the city climbs the hills, up to 400 meters (1,300 ft) and above.
During cold spells, the temperature can drop to -8/-10 °C (14/18 °F), and more rarely below. In March 1987 it dropped to -16.6 °C (2.1 °F).
In summer, during heat waves, temperatures can reach 40 °C (104 °F). In July 2021 it reached 42.8 °C (109 °F) at the airport.
