November is the last autumn month in the United States.
Temperatures are already low, close to freezing, in the inland areas of the north (see Helena, Fargo). In the center-south, temperatures are gradually milder, and are pleasantly warm in the southernmost part, in the southern coast of California (see Los Angeles), in the desert areas of the southwest (see Phoenix), on the Gulf coast of Mexico (see New Orleans) and in Florida. In South Florida (see Miami), you can often still go to the beach.
However, over the course of the month, the weather gradually takes on more and more wintry characteristics. Furthermore,
cold spells can occur in almost the entire territory. Typically, they are less intense than in winter, but in the Northwest, in the Rocky Mountains and in the Great Plains, there can be severe and early cold snaps. In general, only the coast of California (see San Francisco, Los Angeles) and southern Florida (see Miami) are sheltered from cold spells.
Precipitation is frequent and abundant in the western part of the Pacific Northwest, in the states of Washington and Oregon (see Seattle), where the wettest period of the year begins. On the central-southern coast of California (see San Francisco, Los Angeles), where the approaching winter is the only rainy season, the rains are gradually more frequent.
In the central eastern part of the United States, the rains are quite frequent in the northern part, in the Great Lakes and in New England.
In many other areas (on the eastern side of the Rocky Mountains, in the Mid-West, in Texas and in Florida), on the other hand, the rains decrease, so much so that overall, November is one of the least rainy months in the United States.
From June to November is the season of
hurricanes, which can affect the states bordering the Gulf of Mexico (Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida) and the southernmost states of the Atlantic (Georgia, North and South Carolina). In November we are at the end of the hurricane period, so in this month they are rare, generally not intense, and do not affect Texas, but only the eastern part of the Gulf of Mexico.
The
sea is warm enough for swimming in southwestern Texas (see Corpus Christi, South Padre Island), in Florida and North Carolina.
