Thailand - weather in January

Flag - Thailand

Map - Thailand

In January, a winter month, the climate in Thailand is generally hot and sunny, except on the north-eastern coast of peninsular Thailand, where it is still a fairly rainy month. However, together with December, this is the coolest (or least hot) month of the year.

Daytime temperatures are high everywhere, however, they range from 29/30 °C (84/86 °F) in the north, to 33 °C (91 °F) in the hottest areas, which are the capital, Bangkok, and the south-western coast of peninsular Thailand (see Phuket, Krabi).
Nights, on the other hand, are quite cool in the inland areas of the north, especially in the northernmost cities (see Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai), where they can sometimes even be cold. Sometimes, nights can be cool even in Bangkok.

The rains are very rare or completely absent in the center-north. We are in fact in the period of the northeast monsoon, which brings good weather almost everywhere, except on the northeastern coast of the aforementioned peninsular Thailand (see Koh Samui, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Songkhla), which is hit by winds that have been charged with humidity after passing over the Gulf of Thailand. It must be said that this phenomenon is generally more evident in the previous months, that is, at the end of the year, when the rains in this area are much more abundant, however, during La Niña years, the rains in this area can be abundant even at the beginning of the year.

The sea in Thailand is always pleasantly warm for swimming, even in winter.

The days are still among the shortest of the year, however, during the month their length gradually increases. However, in Thailand there is not a big difference in the length of the days between winter and summer (a couple of hours in the north, less than one hour in the south). In January, the average day in Thailand is just over 11 hours in the north and almost 12 hours in the south.

The following tables show the climate averages in the month of January in Thailand in a selection of locations.
