Spain - weather in March

Flag - Spain

Map - Spain

In March, the first month of spring, the climate in Spain is mild, humid and rainy in the north, in the regions facing the Atlantic Ocean, and often sunny in the center-south.

The average daily temperature is 8/9 °C (46/48 °F) in the northern part of the plateau (see León, Valladolid, Salamanca), is around 11 °C (52 °F) in Madrid, 12 °C (54 °F) in Barcelona, Mallorca and on the northern coast, facing the Atlantic (see La Coruña, Gijón, Santander), while it exceeds 14 °C on the southern coast, in Andalusia.

However, the weather in March is quite unstable, with possible temperature changes. On the one hand, sometimes cold air can still descend from the North Atlantic. On the other hand, in the south, during periods of good weather, the temperature can already reach and exceed 30 °C, especially in the second half of the month.

Precipitation is frequent and sometimes abundant in the north, in the Autonomous Communities facing the Atlantic (see Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, Basque Country), while in the rest of the country it is moderate, and in some areas, such as that of Zaragoza and the southeast (see Valencia, Alicante, Murcia, Almería), it is quite rare.
In the mountains, precipitation occurs in the form of snow. There are also mountain resorts where you can ski, in the Pyrenees but also in the south, in the Sierra Nevada, thanks to the higher altitude.

As for the wind, March in Spain is on average the windiest month of the year. On the Balearic Islands, especially in Menorca, the easternmost one, the tramontana, the north wind from France, blows quite often. In Zaragoza and the Ebro Valley, a cold and dry wind from the northwest, the cierzo, can blow instead.
In the south, the coast of Andalusia, called Costa del Sol but once called Costa del Viento, is quite windy, due to the west and east winds, especially on the strait that separates it from Morocco (see Tarifa).
In the north, the coast and the Pyrenees can instead be swept by humid winds from the Atlantic Ocean.

During the month, the length of the days gradually increases. On March 20, the spring equinox, the day lasts 12 hours all over the world.

The following tables show the climate averages in the month of March in Spain in a selection of locations.
