Spain - weather in June

Flag - Spain

Map - Spain

In June, the first summer month, the climate is hot and sunny in much of Spain, while it is cool and humid on the northern coast and in the Pyrenees.

The average daily temperature is 17.5 °C (64 °F) on the northern coast, facing the Atlantic (see La Coruña, Gijón, Santander), 18/20 °C (64/68 °F) in the northern part of the plateau (see León, Valladolid, Salamanca), 21.5 °C (71 °F) in Barcelona and 23 °C (73 °F) in Madrid, while it exceeds 25 °C (77 °F) in the Andalusian plain (see Seville, Córdoba), which in summer is the hottest area in Europe.
In the southern tip of Spain, in the strait beyond which Morocco is located (see Tarifa), which has a cool and windy microclimate, the temperature drops again, in fact the average is 20 °C (68 °F).
It is generally not as hot as in July and August, furthermore, sea breezes blow on the coasts in the afternoon, however, in the inland areas there can be very hot periods, during which the temperature can reach 38/40 °C (100/104 °F) on the plateau (see Madrid, Toledo) and even 45 °C (113 °F) in the Andalusian plain (see Seville, Córdoba).

The rains are frequent in the north, on the Atlantic coast, where they can occur in the form of drizzle or short showers, while they are rare or very rare in the center-south. In the afternoon or evening, thunderstorms can break out in the mountainous areas.

The sea is decidedly cold for swimming on the northern coast (Atlantic Ocean), with a temperature below 19 °C (66 °F), while on the Mediterranean coast, and also on the southwestern coast exposed to a portion of the Atlantic Ocean (Costa de la Luz), the sea is still cool, with a temperature of 20/21 °C (68/70 °F).

During the month, the length of the days gradually increases until June 21, the summer solstice, which is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. In June, the average day in Spain is almost 15 and a half hours in the north, and just over 14 and a half hours in the south.
