Spain - weather in July

Flag - Spain

Map - Spain

In July, the central month of summer, the climate is hot and sunny in much of Spain, while it is cool and humid on the northern coast and in the Pyrenees.

The average daily temperature is 19/20 °C (66/68 °F) on the northern coast, facing the Atlantic (see La Coruña, Gijón, Santander), 21/22 °C (70/72 °F) in the northern part of the plateau (see León, Valladolid, Salamanca), 24.5 °C (76 °F) in Barcelona and 26 °C (79 °F) in Madrid, while it reaches 28 °C (82 °F) in the Andalusian plain (see Seville, Córdoba), which is often very hot, and in summer is the hottest area in Europe.
In the southern tip of Spain, in the strait beyond which Morocco is located (see Tarifa), which has a cool and windy microclimate, the temperature drops again, in fact the average is 22 °C (72 °F).
Summer in some areas of Spain is traditionally hot, furthermore, in recent years, with global warming, there have been long periods of very hot weather. On the Mediterranean coast, sea breezes blow in the afternoon, even though the air is humid (see Barcelona, Valencia). Instead, in the inland areas there is often scorching heat.
On the hottest days, the temperature can reach 40 °C (104 °F) in Madrid, while in the south, in Extremadura and the Andalusian plain, it can reach as high as 45 °C (113 °F).

Rainfall is quite frequent in the north, on the Atlantic coast, where it can occur in the form of drizzle or short showers, while it is very rare or completely absent in the center-south. In the afternoon or evening, thunderstorms can break out in mountainous areas. However, in Spain, July is on average the driest month of the year.

The sea is warm enough for swimming on the Mediterranean coast, especially in the central part (see the Balearic Islands, Valencia, Alicante), where its temperature reaches or exceeds 24 °C (75 °F).
In the southern part of the Mediterranean coast, in Andalusia (see Málaga), and on the Costa de la Luz, exposed to a portion of the Atlantic Ocean (see Cádiz) the sea is a little cooler, around 22 °C (72 °F).
In the north, on the Atlantic Ocean, the sea is cold in the northwest, in Galicia (see La Coruña, Vigo), since its temperature is 18 °C (64 °F), while on the northern coast (see Asturias, Cantabria, Basque Country), it is cool but less prohibitive, since its temperature is 20/21 °C (68/70 °F).

The days are still among the longest of the year, however, during the month their length gradually decreases. In July, the day in Spain lasts on average 15 hours in the north and almost 14 and a half hours in the south.
