Map - Spain

In August, the last month of summer, the climate is hot and sunny in much of Spain, while it is cool and humid on the northern coast and in the Pyrenees.

On average, August in Spain is the hottest month of the year. The average daily temperature is around 20 °C (68 °F) on the northern coast, facing the Atlantic (see La Coruña, Gijón, Santander), 21/22 °C (70/72 °F) in the northern part of the plateau (see León, Valladolid, Salamanca), 25 °C (77 °F) in Barcelona and 26 °C (79 °F) in Madrid, while it exceeds 28 °C (82 °F) in the Andalusian plain (see Seville, Córdoba), which is often very hot and in summer is the hottest area in Europe.
In the southern tip of Spain, in the strait beyond which Morocco is located (see Tarifa), which has a cool and windy microclimate, the temperature drops again, in fact the average is 23 °C (73 °F).
Summer in some areas of Spain is traditionally hot, furthermore, in recent years, with global warming, there have been long periods of very hot weather. On the Mediterranean coast, sea breezes blow in the afternoon, even though the air is humid (see Barcelona, Valencia). Instead, in the inland areas there is often scorching heat.
On the hottest days, the temperature can reach 40 °C (104 °F) in Madrid, while in the south, in Extremadura and the Andalusian plain, it can reach as high as 45 °C (113 °F).

Rainfall is quite frequent in the north, on the Atlantic coast, where it can occur in the form of drizzle or short showers, while it is very rare or completely absent in the center-south. In the afternoon or evening, thunderstorms can break out in mountainous areas.

The sea is warm enough for swimming on the Mediterranean coast, especially in the central part (see Balearic Islands, Valencia, Alicante), where its temperature reaches 26 °C (79 °F).
In the southern part of the Mediterranean coast, in Andalusia (see Málaga), and on the Costa de la Luz, exposed to a portion of the Atlantic Ocean (see Cádiz) the sea is a little cooler, around 22.5/23 °C (72/73 °F).
In the north, on the Atlantic Ocean, the sea is cold in the northwest, in Galicia (see La Coruña, Vigo), since its temperature is 19 °C (66 °F), while on the northern coast (see Asturias, Cantabria, Basque Country), it is fresh but less prohibitive, since its temperature is 21.5 °C (71 °F). However, August is the month in which the sea is warmest.

During the month, the length of the days gradually decreases. In August, the average day in Spain lasts almost 14 hours in the north and 13 and a half hours in the south.

The following tables show the climate averages in the month of August in Spain in a selection of locations.
