Portugal - weather in September

Flag - Portugal

Map - Portugal

Even though it is the first autumn month, in September the weather in Portugal is often sunny and warm, still with summery characteristics, especially in the first half of the month. In any case, the climate is cooler along the coasts, and warmer in the inland areas.
Temperatures gradually decrease, while the rains become more frequent, with the first waves of autumnal bad weather, more likely in the second half of the month and in the center-north.

On the coast, the average daily temperature is 19 °C (66 °F) in Porto, in the north, 22 °C (71.5 °F) in Lisbon, in the center-south, and 22.5 °C (72.5 °F) in Faro, on the southern coast (Algarve).
In the coastal areas most exposed to the ocean winds, which generally blow from the northwest (see Peniche, Cabo da Roca), it is cool even in the center-south. On the other hand, in the inland area of the south-east, the warmest in the country (see Évora, Beja), the average maximum is 30 °C (86 °F).
Sometimes it can get cool at night, especially in the north and in the interior, where the night temperature can drop below 10 °C (50 °F).
On the other hand, sometimes, especially in the first half of the month, there can still be heat waves from Africa, which generally do not last long, during which the temperature can exceed 30 °C (86 °F) in the north and on the coasts of the center-south, and 35 °C (95 °F) in the inland areas of the south (see Évora, Beja).

The rains are relatively frequent in the north, while they are still very rare in the south.

The sea is quite cold for swimming in the north, where its temperature is 18.5 °C (65 °F), while in the south, on the Algarve coast, it is cool, but at least it reaches 21.5 °C (71 °F).

During the month, the length of the days gradually decreases. On September 22, the autumn equinox, the day lasts 12 hours out of 24 all over the world.
