Portugal - weather in March

Flag - Portugal

Map - Portugal

In March, the first month of spring, the weather in Portugal is mild, quite unstable, but also with some sunny periods.

On the coast, the average daily temperature is 12.5 °C (54.5 °F) in Porto, in the north, 15 °C (59 °F) in Lisbon, in the center-south, and also in Faro, on the southern coast (Algarve).

As mentioned, the weather in March is quite unstable. On the one hand, sometimes cold air can still descend from the North Atlantic, which can bring snowfall below 1,000 meters (3,300 feet) in the northeast. On the other hand, in the south, in periods of good weather, the temperature can already reach and exceed 25 °C (77 °F), especially in the second half of the month.

The precipitation decreases compared to the previous months, however, it is frequent and quite abundant in the center-north, especially on the coast and in the mountains, and quite frequent and moderate in the center-south.
In the mountains, precipitation can still occur in the form of snow. There is also a small area in the Serra da Estrela where it is possible to ski. The ski season generally lasts until the end of March.

The wind blows often, and at times, especially in the north, it can be strong.

As mentioned, there can be periods of good weather. They are brought by the Azores anticyclone and are more likely in the south.

In fact, in the south there is a good amount of sun, which in the Algarve shines for an average of almost 8 hours a day.

During the month, the day length gradually increases. On March 20, the spring equinox, the day lasts 12 hours out of 24 all over the world.

The following tables show the climate averages in the month of March in Portugal in a selection of locations.
