Portugal - weather in August

Flag - Portugal

Map - Portugal

In August, the last month of summer, the weather in Portugal is generally sunny and warm, locally cooler along the coast, and very hot in the inland areas. The ocean, in fact, acts as a natural air conditioner, while hot air can flow in from Africa.

On average, August in Portugal is, albeit slightly, the warmest month of the year. On the coast, the average daily temperature is 20 °C (68 °F) in Porto, in the north, 23.5 °C (74.5 °F) in Lisbon, in the center-south, and 24.5 °C (76 °F) in Faro, on the southern coast (Algarve).
In the coastal areas most exposed to the ocean winds, which generally blow from the northwest (see Peniche, Cabo da Roca), it is cool even in the center-south. On the other hand, in the inland area of the south-east, the hottest in the country (see Évora, Beja), the average maximum is 34 °C (93 °F).
Sometimes it can get cool at night, especially in the north and in the interior, where the night temperature can drop below 10 °C (50 °F).
On the other hand, there can be heat waves from Africa, during which the temperature can exceed 35 °C (95 °F) in the north and on the coasts of the center-south, and 40 °C (104 °F) in the inland areas of the south (see Évora, Beja).

The rains are rare in the north, and very rare or completely absent in the center-south. July and August in Portugal are the driest months of the year.

The sea is quite cold for swimming in the north, where its temperature is 19 °C (66 °F), while in the south, on the Algarve coast, it is cool, but at least it reaches 21.5 °C (71 °F).

During the month, the length of the days gradually decreases. In August, the average day in Portugal is almost 14 hours long in the north and 13 and a half hours in the south.

The following tables show the climate averages in the month of August in Portugal in a selection of locations.
