July is the central month of summer in Japan, and is the hottest month on the small southern islands, while in the rest of the country, due to the delay in warming of the seas surrounding it, the hottest month is August. In July, the climate is very mild to quite warm in the north, while in the center-south it is hot, muggy and rainy.
The daily
average temperature is 18 °C (64.5 °F) in the north of the island of Hokkaido (see Abashiri) and 21.5 °C (70.5 °F) in Sapporo.
On the island of Honshu, the average is 22.5 °C (72.5 °F) in the far north (see Aomori), 23.5 °C (74.5 °F) in Sendai, in the northeast, and 25.5 °C (78 °F) in Niigata, in northwest. In the south-east, the average is 26.5 °C (79.5 °F) in Tokyo, while on the southern coast of Honshu (see Osaka), but also on the islands of Kyushu (see Fukuoka, Kagoshima) and Shikoku, the average is 28/28.5 °C (82.5/83.5 °F).
On the small southern islands the temperature is higher, as the average is 29.5 °C (85 °F) in Okinawa and 30 °C (86 °F) in Ishigaki.
Sometimes
heat waves can occur, during which the temperature can reach 38/39 °C (100/102 °F) in the large cities of central and southern Japan.
As for the
rains, they are quite frequent in the north, while in the center-south they are frequent and abundant.
In particular, in the center-south, in June and July it is the period called
Baiu or "plum rain", with abundant rainfall. This very rainy period normally runs from May 29 to July 13 in southern Kyushu (see Kagoshima), from June 6 to July 19 in Kyoto, from June 8 to July 20 in Tokyo, and from June 12 to July 27 in the north of Honshu, where, however, the effects are less evident.
On the small southern islands (see Okinawa, Ishigaki), this very rainy period occurs a month earlier than on the main islands of Japan, ie in May and June, while in July there is a relative decrease in rainfall, which will resume with great intensity in August.
Typhoons, the tropical cyclones of the western Pacific, may occur in July, although they will be more frequent in the following months, from August early October. Typhoons are more frequent on the small southern islands, but sometimes they can move northwards, affecting the main islands, starting from the southern coasts.
In July, the
sea in Japan is warm enough for swimming, as well as on the small southern islands, on the south coast of the islands of Kyushu and Shikoku, and on the south coast of Honshu approximately up to Mito, northeast of Tokyo. On the north-west coast of Honshu, in Niigata and Kanazawa, it is a little cool but all in all acceptable.
Japan is located at medium latitudes, however, in July the
days are quite long, especially in the north, where the sun remains above the horizon for about 15 hours a day.
