Italy - weather in March

Flag - Italy

Map - Italy

In March, the first month of spring, the climate in Italy is mild in the lowlands, even in the north. In the mountains, in the Alps and on the highest peaks of the Apennines, on the other hand, the climate is still cold.
However, March in Italy is an unstable month, characterized by clashes of air masses, with the first days above 20 °C (68 °F), alternating with the return of cold winter-like weather.

In the plains, the average daily temperature is 9/10 °C (48/50 °F) on the Po-Venetian plain (see Milan, Turin, Bologna, Venice), 12 °C (54 °F) on the Ligurian Riviera (see Genoa, Sanremo), 11 °C (52 °F) in Florence and Rome, and 12/13 °C (54/55 °F) in Sicily.

Precipitation is moderate and relatively frequent. In the north, it still occurs in the form of snow in the mountains.

Generally the Alps are covered in snow and you can still ski, also because there are artificial snow systems, while on the Apennines, in the center-south, sometimes there is no snow and the temperature is too high.

In this month, cold waves are less intense than in the winter months, moreover, they are becoming rarer due to global warming. However, the winds from the north can bring snowfall to the central-southern Apennines, sometimes even at low altitudes, and cold and rainy days in the plains.
The cold wind can be strong: the bora in the north-east, the tramontana on the Apennines, and the maestrale on Sardinia.

During the month, the length of the days gradually increases. On March 20, the spring equinox, the day is 12 hours long around the world.

The following tables show the climate averages in the month of March in Italy in a selection of locations.
