Italy - weather in August

Flag - Italy

Map - Italy

In August, the last month of summer, the climate in Italy is hot, muggy and sunny at low altitudes, while it is cooler in the mountains, with possible thunderstorms.

In the plains, the average daily temperature is 24/25 °C (75/77 °F) in the center-north and 26/27 °C (79/81 °F), but locally higher, in the south.
Generally, August is the hottest month of the year in the north, while in the center-south the hottest month is July.
In recent years, with global warming, long periods of very hot weather have occurred. On the coasts, sea breezes blow in the afternoon, while in the Po Valley (see Milan, Bologna), in the inland valleys (see Florence) and in the center of Rome, the heat is often felt. During the hottest days, the temperature can reach and exceed 37/38 °C (99/100 °F) in the center-north, while in the south, especially in Sicily, Sardinia and Puglia, when the sirocco blows from Africa, it can exceed 40 °C (104 °F), with peaks of 45 °C (113 °F).

The rains are very rare or completely absent in the south, and rare in the center, while in the north, in the plains they are quite rare, however, we cannot exclude some rainy days, especially in the second half of the month, furthermore, thunderstorms can break out in the afternoon and evening. These thunderstorms are quite frequent in the far north, in the Alps, and also in the Prealps and on the prealpine lakes (Maggiore, Como, Garda), and can break out, more rarely, also on the Apennines, the mountain range that crosses central-southern Italy.

The sea is warm enough to swim in, and in August it is the warmest of the year, with temperatures of 25 °C (77 °F) or more.

During the month, the length of the days gradually decreases. In August, the average day in Italy is 14 hours long in the north and 13 and a half hours in the south.

The following tables show the climate averages in the month of August in Italy in a selection of locations.
