Germany - weather in August

Flag - Germany

Map - Germany

In August, the last month of summer, the weather in Germany is quite cool, humid and windy on the northern coast, while in Berlin and most of the country it is warm.

August in Germany is the warmest month of the year on the northern coast, while in the rest of the country it is very similar to July, but slightly cooler. The average daily temperature is around 18 °C (64 °F) on the northern coast (North Sea and Baltic), 18/19 °C (64/66 °F) in the west (North Rhine-Westphalia) and in the southeast, on the Bavarian plateau (see Munich), 19/20 °C (66/68 °F) in Berlin and the east, while it reaches 20/21 °C (68/70 °F) in the southwest, in the Rhine River valley (see Frankfurt, Karlsruhe, Freiburg), which is the warmest region, and where hot and muggy days are most likely.

However, the German summer is quite unstable. There can be cool and rainy days almost everywhere, but especially in the west (North Rhine-Westphalia) and in Bavaria. At night it can get very cool, with temperatures dropping below 10 °C (50 °F).
On the other hand, on hot days the temperature can reach 30/32 °C (86/90 °F), although this rarely happens along the coast, in the far north.
Furthermore, there can sometimes be heatwaves, which used to be very rare but are becoming more frequent due to global warming, and during which the temperature can reach or exceed 35 °C (95 °F). These heatwaves are more likely in the west, including Rhine-Westphalia, but can also affect Berlin, while the north coast and Bavaria in the south are a bit more sheltered.

Rainfall is quite frequent, as it happens all year round in Germany. Rainfall brought by Atlantic disturbances is more frequent in the west, in Rhineland-Westphalia. In addition, on warm and sunny days, thunderstorms can break out in the afternoon and evening. These thunderstorms are more frequent in the south, close to the Alps (see Constance, Munich), and even more so in the Alps themselves (see Garmisch, the Zugspitze).
August in Germany is the second rainiest month of the year after July. Sometimes, particularly intense or prolonged rain can lead to floods.

Even though the sun in Germany never shines very often, we are in the sunniest period of the year, which goes from April to August.

The sea is cold for swimming, both the North Sea and the Baltic, however, its temperature is around 18 °C or 64 °F (the highest of the year), which for tourists from northern Europe can be sufficient.

During the month, the length of the days gradually decreases. In August, the average day in Germany lasts almost 15 hours in the north and about 14 hours in the south.

The following tables show the climate averages in the month of August in Germany in a selection of locations.
