July is the central month of winter in the Southern Hemisphere.
In the eastern part of Ecuador, occupied by the Amazon rainforest (see Nuevo Rocafuerte), this month is also
hot, muggy and rainy.
In the northern part of the coast (see Esmeraldas, Atacames), which is located north of the Equator, the relatively dry period begins in July and will last until November. However, in the far north (see Valdez, San Lorenzo de Esmeraldas), where the climate is equatorial, it also rains in this period.
Instead, in the central-southern part of the coast (see Manta, Salinas, Playas), the temperatures are a little lower and the rains are very rare or completely absent, under the influence of the cool Humboldt current. However, due to this current, the sky is often cloudy.
In the
Andes, where the temperature decreases with altitude, we are in the relatively dry period, in fact, the rains are quite rare and not abundant. Generally, July is the driest month in the north-central part (see Quito), although there is not much difference with August. This is also the time of year when, at night, it can get colder in the southern part (see Cuenca).
The
sea is warm enough for swimming in the center-north, while in the south it begins to be a bit cool, around 22 °C (71.5 °F).
