December is the first summer month in the Southern Hemisphere.
In the eastern part of Ecuador, occupied by the Amazon rainforest (see Nuevo Rocafuerte), this month is also
hot, muggy and rainy.
In the northern part of the coast (see Esmeraldas, Atacames), where it is hot all year round, the rains begin to increase, although the rainiest period of the year goes from January to June. In the far north (see Valdez, San Lorenzo de Esmeraldas), where the climate is equatorial, and therefore there is no real dry season, it rains more often.
In the central-southern part of the coast (see Manta, Salinas, Playas), temperatures are now high and are similar to those in the north, however, the rains are still very rare or completely absent, and will only increase in the following months. However, the sky is often cloudy here as well.
In the
Andes, where the temperature decreases with altitude, December is a moderately rainy month. Temperatures are stable all year round in the north (see Quito), crossed by the Equator, while in the south, we are in the mildest period of the year (see Cuenca).
The
sea is warm enough for swimming both in the north and in the south, however, in the south it is a little cooler, around 23 °C (73.5 °F).
