Denmark - weather in January

Flag - Denmark

Map - Denmark

In January, the middle of winter, the weather in Denmark is cold, grey and wet.

January in Denmark is the coldest month of the year together with February. The average daily temperature is just above freezing.
January is also the windiest month of the year. Although the temperature is a little higher than in other Scandinavian countries, the wind and humidity can increase the feeling of cold.

Precipitation is frequent, and is a little more frequent and abundant on the western coast of the Jutland peninsula, exposed to the North Sea (see Vestervig, Esbjerg) than on the coasts and islands exposed to the Baltic Sea (see Copenhagen).
Given the temperatures, precipitation can occur in the form of rain, snow, sleet or rain mixed with snow. Unlike in other northern European countries, the ground is not normally covered in snow, although it can be for more or less long periods depending on the year.

During cold waves, which occur when the flow of western currents stops, the temperature can drop to -8/-9 °C (16/18 °F), and only in the coldest winters to -15 °C (5 °F) or below.
On the other hand, on milder days, the temperature can reach 8/10 °C (46/50 °F).

The sun is rarely seen: the sky is often cloudy.

The days are still among the shortest of the year, however, their length gradually increases during the month. In January, the average day in Denmark is 7 and a half hours long in the north and 8 hours in the south.

The following tables show the climate averages in the month of January in Denmark in a selection of locations.
