Belgium - weather in July

Flag - Belgium

Map - Belgium

In July, the central month of summer, the climate in Belgium is relatively warm in Brussels and the plain, while it is a little cooler, wetter and windier on the coast (see Ostend) and also in the Ardennes, in the south-east.

The average daily temperature is 17.5 °C (63.5 °F) on the coast (see Ostend), and 18.5/19.5 °C (65/67 °F) in the plain east of the coast (see Brussels, Antwerp), while it drops to 16 °C (61 °F) in the Ardennes (see Bastogne, Spa and Saint-Hubert), which are further from the sea and at about 500 meters (1,600 feet) above sea level.
At night it can get very cool, in fact the temperature can drop below 10 °C (50 °F).
Being influenced by the North Sea, Belgium is quite sheltered from the heat waves that are becoming more frequent in some European countries. However, there can sometimes be very hot periods of short duration, during which the temperature can reach or exceed 35 °C (95 °F).

The rains are quite frequent and abundant. In July and August, Belgium experiences the second rainy peak of the year after December-January. On warm and sunny days, thunderstorms can break out in the afternoon and evening, especially in the Ardennes.

The sea is cold for swimming, in fact its temperature is around 16 °C (61 °F).

Although the sun in Belgium never shines very often, it is the sunniest period of the year, which lasts until August.

The days are still among the longest of the year, however, their length gradually decreases over the course of the month. In July, the average day in Belgium is 16 hours long.

The following tables show the climate averages in the month of July in Belgium in a selection of locations.
