Belgium - weather in January

Flag - Belgium

Map - Belgium

In January, the central month of winter, the climate in Belgium is quite cold, grey and wet on the coast and in the plains, while in the south-east, in the Ardennes, it is colder.

January in Belgium is generally the coldest month of the year. The average daily temperature is 4 °C (39 °F) on the coast (see Ostend), and slightly lower in the plains (see Brussels, Antwerp), while it drops to 0.5 °C (33 °F) in the Ardennes, for example in Bastogne, Spa and Saint-Hubert, which are located further from the sea and at about 500 meters (1,600 feet) above sea level.

January is also the windiest month of the year.

On the coast and in the plains, precipitation is frequent, but generally not abundant, and usually occurs in the form of rain, while in the Ardennes it is more frequent and abundant, in addition, it occurs quite often in the form of snow.
However, it can sometimes snow even in the plains.

During cold waves, which are becoming rarer due to global warming, the temperature can drop to -7/-8 °C (18/19 °F), and sometimes below.
On the other hand, on milder days, which can however be windy, the temperature can reach 12/13 °C (54/55 °F), and sometimes exceed them, at least in the plains.

The sun is rarely seen: the sky is often cloudy.

The days are still among the shortest of the year, however, their length gradually increases during the month. In January, the average day in Belgium lasts 8 hours and a half.

The following tables show the climate averages in the month of January in Belgium in a selection of locations.
