The city is located in the northwest of the state of New York, 160 meters (525 feet) above sea level and a short distance from the southern shore of Lake Ontario.
The average temperature of the coldest month (January) is of -3.2 °C (26.2 °F), that of the warmest month (July) is of 22.4 °C (72.4 °F).

Rochester

Winter, from late November to early March, is very cold.
On average, there are 45 icing days (that is, on which the air temperature does not go above freezing), and that usually happens from November to March.
On average, 259 centimeters (102 in) of snow fall per year. It usually snows from October through April, although snow normally covers the ground from mid or late December to early March. The heaviest snowfall in one day occurred on January 3, 1996, when 58 cm (23 in) of snow fell. Rochester is a particularly snowy city due to the so-called lake-effect snow, whereby the cold wind from Canada is charged with humidity as it passes over the lake. This phenomenon occurs more easily in the first part of winter, since the lake often freezes at the end of January and in February.
Cold waves are intense, in fact, the temperature drops below -18 °C (0 °F) almost every year. The record cold, -28 °C (-18.5 °F), occurred in February 1979.
However, there may be short periods when the temperature exceeds 10/12 °C (50/54 °F) even in the middle of winter.

Summer, from June to August, is hot and sunny, although thunderstorms can break out in the afternoon. In the afternoon, the refreshing breeze blows from the lake.
On average, there are 8 days with a maximum temperature equal to or above 32 °C (90 °F), and that usually happens from June through September. The record is 36.5 °C (97.5 °F), set a few times, including in July 2011.

Spring and autumn, from mid-March to May and from September to mid-November, are unsettled seasons, with fairly frequent rains and sudden changes in temperature. However, there are also stable and pleasant periods.

The temperature of lake Ontario ranges between 2.5 °C (36.5 °F) and 21.5 °C (70.5 °F). During cold spells, the lake can freeze partially. In February 2015, which was a particularly cold month, it almost completely froze.

Best Time

The best times to visit Rochester are spring and autumn, especially the months of May and September.
However, in summer it is generally not too hot, so after all you can also go in this season, especially in June and if you don't fear the heat.
In October, you can admire the beautiful colors of the trees losing their leaves (the phenomenon called fall foliage).
