Climate chart - Portland_Maine
Portland's climate is humid continental, with cold winters, during which the average temperature is a few degrees below freezing, and warm, rainy summers.

Portland is a city of 68,000 inhabitants, located in the north-east of the United States, in the state of Maine, of which it is the most populous city, on the coast of the Gulf of Maine (belonging to the Atlantic Ocean) and at almost 44 degrees north latitude.
This city should not be confused with Portland, a larger city located in the western United States, in Oregon, and with a much milder climate.

Image of Portland (Maine)

All year round, but especially in summer, fog can form.

Precipitation is quite abundant, since it amounts to 1,200 millimeters (47 inches) per year, in fact, disturbances can pass in all seasons, due to the continuous clashes of air masses. In summer, when they become rarer, thunderstorms can break out, especially in the first part. As a result, August and September are the months in which rainy days are relatively rarer.

On average, 175 centimeters (69 in) of snow fall per year, with notable variations from one year to another. It usually snows from November to early April. Sometimes real snowstorms can occur, brought by the so-called nor'easters, the depressions formed by the clash between cold air masses coming from Canada and milder and more humid air coming from the Atlantic, where the Gulf Stream flows. In February 2013, 81 cm (32 in) of snow fell in two days.

During cold spells, the temperature drops to -18 °C (0 °F) or below every year. In recent decades, the coldest record is -28.9 °C (-20 °F), recorded on Boxing Day 1980. In January 1977, the monthly daily average was -9.7 °C (14.5 °F), while in January 1994 it was -9.6 °C (14.7 °F).

In summer, there can be short hot periods, usually no more than two or three days, during which the temperature can reach 32/33 °C (90/91 °F), and more rarely 35 °C (95 °F) and above. The heat record is 39 °C (102 °F), set in August 1975.

In theory, Portland and Maine can be hit by the remnants of hurricanes, which after hitting the southern United States turn towards the northeast, however, they generally affected the area to the south, up to New York, and the area to the northeast, i.e. Nova Scotia (Canada).

Best Time

To visit Portland you can choose the period from mid-May to mid-September. It must be said that in summer, especially from late June to mid-August, it can sometimes be very hot.
In autumn, generally with a peak between mid and late October, you can admire the splendid colors taken on by the trees that are losing their leaves (the so-called fall foliage).
