The climate of Palmdale is sub-tropical desert, with mild, relatively rainy winters and very hot, sunny summers.
The city is located in California, north of Los Angeles, 800 meters (2,600 ft) above sea level, in Antelope Valley, a plateau belonging to the Mojave desert. Near the city, at the base of the San Gabriel mountains, there is the San Andreas fault.
In winter, there are mild periods, in which the maximum temperature exceeds 20 °C (68 °F), but also cold periods, in which the night temperature drops a few degrees below freezing. On the coldest nights of the year, the temperature generally drops to -5/-7 °C (19/23 °F), and sometimes even below. In January 2007, it dropped to -12 °C (10.5 °F). Sometimes it can even snow.
Summer is very hot, and the maximum temperature can reach and exceed 40 °C (104 °F), but luckily the air is dry, moreover, in the afternoon, the breeze blows from the mountains, and at night, the temperature drops a lot.
