Climate chart - Nome
Nome has a subarctic climate, with freezing winters and mild summers.
The town is located on the west coast of Alaska, on the Seward Peninsula, at 64 degrees north latitude. Siberia is found 300 km (185 mi) to the west.
The average temperature is between -14.5 °C (5.5 °F) in January and 11 °C (52 °F) in July.
Precipitation in Nome is not abundant and amounts to 440 mm (17 inches) per year, with a minimum in spring and a maximum in summer.

Nome

The winter is very cold, with fairly frequent snowfalls, although generally not abundant. The temperature exceeds freezing very rarely.
On the coldest nights of the year, the temperature typically drops to -35 °C (-31 °F). The coldest record is -47.8 °C (-54 °F) and was set in January 1989.
Sometimes, fog can form.

The summer is cool, with some cold days, in which highs remain around 10 °C (50 °F). The rains are quite frequent, and as often happens in Alaska, they tend to increase in the second part of the season.
There may be pleasant periods, when the temperature reaches or exceeds 20 °C (68 °F). It can rarely get hot too. In June 2013, a week after a cold period, in which the maximum was 2/3 °C (36/37 °F), the temperature reached 30 °C (86 °F).

Since it is located to the south of the Arctic Circle, in Nome the sun rises even in winter, however, until January the days are short and the sun is rarely seen. In summer, the days are not as long as in the extreme north of Alaska (see Utqiagvik), but approximately from May 18 to July 26, there are the "white nights", that is, when the sunset lights remain even at midnight. However, in summer, both because of the shorter days and the more frequent rains, the sun shines for a lower number of hours than on the north coast.

From December to April, the sea is near the freezing point, so in colder periods it can freeze, while the water temperature reaches 10.5 °C (51 °F) in August.

Best Time

The best time to visit Nome is summer, from June to August, being the mildest season. In June, the rains are rarer, but cold weather is more lilkely, especially in the first half of the month. In July and August the temperatures are a little milder, however the rains become progressively more frequent.
