Climate chart - Fargo
The climate of Fargo is continental, with very cold, snowy winters and warm summers.

Fargo is a city of 125,000 inhabitants, located in North Dakota, of which it is the largest city, at 270 meters (885 feet) above sea level and at almost 47 degrees north latitude.
However, the city is located on the border with the state of Minnesota, where the cities of Moorhead and Dilworth are located, while to the west is the city of West Fargo. Together, these cities make up the Fargo–Moorhead metropolitan area.
The Red River of the North, which marks the border between the two states, travels north and then empties into Lake Winnipeg, in Canada. Sometimes the river can flood, due to the spring rains, which add to the thaw, as happened in April 1997, in late March 2009 and in April 2011.
We are in the Great Prairies of North America, in the coldest part of the U.S. Midwest, characterized by temperature swings, cold waves brought by the blizzard in winter, but sometimes also heat waves in summer.

Image of Fargo

Precipitation is not abundant, since it amounts to 610 millimeters (24 inches) per year. The period from May to September is the wettest, also due to afternoon thunderstorms.
Winter is the driest season.
On average, 130 centimeters (51 in) of snow fall per year. It usually snows from October to April, but it can occasionally snow in May.
On January 22, 1982, 41 cm (16 in) of snow fell in one day.

Winter, from mid-November to mid-March, is very cold, with temperatures usually below freezing even during the day. In fact, Fargo is one of the coldest cities in the United States.
Cold waves are intense. The temperature drops below -30 °C (-22 °F) almost every year. The coldest record is -38.4 °C (-37.1 °F), set in February 1996. In January 1977, the monthly daily average was -19.5 °C (-3.1 °F), while in January 1994 it was -19.4 °C (-2.9 °F).

Summer, from June to August, is warm and sunny, although with cool nights, and with the possibility of thunderstorms in the afternoon. We cannot rule out also the possibility of some rainy days.
On the hottest days of the year, the temperature usually reaches 37/38 °C (99/100 °F). The heat record is 41 °C (105.8 °F), set in July 1988.
Although we are not in the area of the United States most affected by tornadoes, they can sometimes occur. Unlike in the central-southern United States, in this northern area, tornadoes are more frequent in the summer.

Spring and fall, from mid-March to May and from September to mid-November, are unsettled seasons, with fairly frequent but not abundant rains, wind and temperature changes (especially in spring).

Best Time

The best time to visit Fargo is early fall, from September to early October. You can also choose spring, especially the month of May, which is, however, a more unstable period.
You can also choose the summer, from June to August, since the weather is generally warm to hot, but it must be said that sometimes it can be very hot.
