The climate of Fairbanks is
cold continental, with freezing winters and mild summers.
Fairbanks is the second largest city in Alaska and is located in the center of the state, at 64 degrees north latitude, on the banks of the Tanana River, a tributary of the Yukon.
The
winter is very cold, with fairly frequent snowfalls, although generally not abundant. The temperature exceeds freezing very rarely.
Sometimes fog can form, which can freeze, resulting in the phenomenon known as soft rime.
On the coldest nights of the year, the temperature usually drops below -40 °C (-40 °F). Fairbanks is the coldest city of a certain size in the United States. The coldest record is -54.4 °C (-66 °F) and was set in January 1934, while in the post-war period the temperature dropped to -52 °C (-62 °F) at the end of December 1961.
On average, 164 cm (65 inches) of snow falls per year. It usually snows from October to March, but sometimes it can snow in September, April and May as well. In April, it snows little because it is a dry month, but the average temperature is still around freezing.
The
summer, from June to August, is very mild or pleasantly warm, but with fairly frequent rains, which gradually increase. At night it can get cold even in this season, although in July the temperature almost never drops below freezing.
There may also be hot periods, in which the temperature reaches or exceeds 28/30 °C.
Here are the average
temperatures.

Precipitation in the interior of Alaska is not abundant, in fact, it ranges from 250 to 350 mm (10 to 13.5 inches) per year, with a relative maximum in summer due to the higher amount of heat, and therefore energy, available during this period. Here is the average precipitation in Fairbanks.

In inland areas of Alaska, the
sun shines more often than on the coast; from April to June in Fairbanks there are as high as 10/11 hours of sunshine per day. However, in late spring and summer, the days are very long because the city is located just south of the Polar Circle. Moreover, since the time zone is shifted two hours compared to the real meridian, on 21 June, the longest day of the year, the sun sets after midnight, at 12.47 in the morning, while it rises two hours later, at 2.57 a.m. The white nights occur roughly from April 25 to August 17.
