Average weather, temperature, rainfall, sunshine hours
Anchorage has a
subarctic climate, with very cold winters and mild summers.
Anchorage is the largest city of Alaska and is located in the south of the state, at 61 degrees north latitude, in a sheltered bay, Cook Inlet. All around the city there are perennially snow-capped
mountains: the Tordrillo Mountains to the west, the Alaska Range to the north, the Chugach Mountains to the east, and the Kenai Mountains to the south.
Ice tongues start from the mountains and turn into rivers before entering the sea, for example, the Knik glacier gives life to the river of the same name which then flows into the sea near Anchorage.
The daily average
temperature ranges from -8.5 °C (16.5 °F) in January to 15.5 °C (59.5 °F) in July.
Due to the enclosed location in the mountains,
precipitation is not abundant, and amounts to only 415 millimeters (16.5 inches) per year. Snow falls from October to April, and despite the low level of precipitation, the total amount of snow that falls in a year is close to 2 meters (6.5 feet). The rainiest period corresponds to the end of summer and the beginning of autumn (August-September).
The
winter is very cold, with fairly frequent snowfalls, although generally not abundant. The temperature is normally below freezing even during the day, however, in some periods, it can rise a few degrees above, even up to 7/8 °C (45/46 °F).
However, there are also times when the temperature drops several degrees below freezing. On the coldest nights, it drops below -20 °C (-4 °F) every year. The coldest record is -38 °C (-36.5 °F) and was set in February 1947.
Sometimes fog can form, which can freeze, resulting in the phenomenon known as soft rime.
Also, the winter is long. In April it can still snow (and occasionally even in May).
The
summer is mild, with rainfall gradually becoming more frequent. There are also cool days, with highs of 13/14 °C (55/27 °F), especially in June and late August.
However, there may also be pleasant periods, with highs of 21/22 °C (70/72 °F).
On the warmest days of the year, the temperature can reach 27/28 °C (81/82 °F). In July 2019, the temperature even reached 32.2 °C (90 °F).
In Anchorage, the
sun shines quite often in spring and summer. However, during this period the days are very long, and roughly from May 7 to August 5 there are white nights.
The
sea in the bay of Anchorage is colder in the winter than the ocean on the Gulf of Alaska coast, and can be covered in floating ice floes.
Best Time
The best time to visit Anchorage is the
summer, from June to August, being the mildest season. June is the driest and sunniest month and July is the warmest month, while in August the rains become frequent.
