Climate chart - Turkmenabat
The climate of Türkmenabat is arid continental, with quite cold winters and very hot, sunny summers.
Türkmenabat, formerly Chardzhou or Chardzhev, is a city of 250,000 inhabitants, the capital of the province of Lebap, located in eastern Turkmenistan, near the border with Uzbekistan, at 190 meters (625 feet) above sea level and 39 degrees north latitude.
The river Amu Darya, which flows through the city in a northwesterly direction, together with the Syr Darya once fed the Aral Sea, a large salt lake shared by Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, which over the decades has almost completely dried up due to exploitation for agriculture.
To the southwest is the Repetek Biosphere Reserve, a protected desert area in the eastern Karakum.

Precipitation is decidedly scarce, amounting to 130 millimeters (5.1 inches) per year. In summer it basically never rains.

The winter, from December to February, is quite cold, with an average January temperature of around 3 °C (37.5 °F).
During periods of stable weather, fog can form.
There are quite mild periods, during which the temperature can reach or exceed 15 °C (59 °F), especially in December and February, and more rarely in January.
Due to the arid climate, both rain and snowfall are quite rare, and in any case generally not abundant.
During cold spells, the temperature drops once every few years to -10 °C (14 °F), and more rarely to -15 °C (5 °F) or below. The coldest record is -25.4 °C (-13.7 °F), set in January 2023. In February 1969, the daily average was -6.5 °C (20.3 °F).
