Average weather, temperature, rainfall, sunshine hours
The climate of Türkmenabat is
arid continental, with quite cold winters and very hot, sunny summers (according to the Köppen classification, cold desert climate - BWk).
Türkmenabat, formerly Chardzhou or Chardzhev, is a city of 250,000 inhabitants, the capital of the province of Lebap, located in eastern Turkmenistan, near the border with Uzbekistan, at 190 meters (625 feet) above sea level and 39 degrees north latitude.
The river
Amu Darya, which flows through the city in a northwesterly direction, together with the Syr Darya once fed the
Aral Sea, a large salt lake shared by Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, which over the decades has almost completely dried up due to exploitation for agriculture.
To the southwest is the
Repetek Biosphere Reserve, a protected desert area in the eastern Karakum.
Precipitation is decidedly scarce, amounting to 130 millimeters (5.1 inches) per year. In summer it basically never rains.
