The climate of Tozeur is subtropical desert, with mild winters and very hot, sunny summers.
The city is located in the west of Tunisia, near the Chott el Djerid, the salty and colorful lake that remains dry for many months of the year. To the northwest is a smaller salt lake, Chott el Gharsa, which lies below sea level.
Although the winter is mild, there can sometimes be cold periods, during which the temperature can drop to 0 °C (32 °F) at night, and remain around 10 °C (50 °F) during the day. In January 2005 it dropped to -3 °C (26.5 °F).
In summer, during heat waves the temperature can reach and exceed 45 °C (113 °F). In July 2018 and in July 2023, it reached 49 °C (120 °F). In July 2023, the average maximum was 44.8 °C (112.6 °F).
