The climate of Sfax is
Mediterranean, with mild, relatively rainy winters and hot, sunny summers.
The city is located on the east coast of Tunisia, in the northern part of the Gulf of Gabès, and a short distance from the Kerkennah islands.
Owing to the proximity to the Sahara, heat waves are possible all year round, but especially in summer, with hot, dry winds able to bring sand and dust.
Although winter is mild, there can sometimes be cold periods, during which the temperature can drop to around 0 °C (32 °F) at night and remain at around 10 °C (50 °F) during the day.
In summer, during invasions of hot air from the desert, which have become more frequent in recent years, the temperature can exceed 40 °C (104 °F). The record heat is 48 °C (118.5 °F), set in June 2003. In July 2023 it reached 46.5 °C (115.7 °F), and the average maximum was 36.6 °C (97.9 °F).
