The climate of Kairouan (El Qayrawān) is subtropical, with mild winters and very hot, sunny summers.
The city is located about 50 km (30 mi) away from the east coast of Tunisia.
Although winter is mild, there can sometimes be cold periods, during which the temperature can drop to around 0 °C (32 °F) at night and remain at around 10 °C (50 °F) during the day. In January 1981 there was even a snowfall, with a maximum temperature of 5 °C (41 °F), and the following night the temperature dropped to -4 °C (25 °F).
In summer, during invasions of hot air from the desert, which have become more frequent in recent years, the temperature can exceed 45 °C (113 °F). The highest record is 50.3 °C (122.5 °F), set in August 2021. In July 2023, the average maximum was 43.5 °C (110.3 °F).
