Climate chart - Khujand
The climate of Khujand is arid continental, with cold winters and very hot, sunny summers.
Khujand (or Khodjent, formerly Leninabad) is a city of 180,000 inhabitants, located in the northwest of Tajikistan (the second largest), in the province of Sughd (of which it is the capital), at 350 meters (1,150 feet) above sea level and at 40 degrees north latitude.
The river Syr Darya, coming from the east, from the Fergana Valley, before crossing the city widens into the Kayrakkum reservoir (or Tajik lake), built in the 1950s and one of the main causes of the drying up of the Aral Sea.
A short distance away, there are the border with Uzbekistan to the west and with Kyrgyzstan to the south.
To the north are the Kurama Mountains, whose highest peak, Mount Boboiob, reaches 3,769 meters (12,365 feet). To the south are instead the first foothills of the Pamir-Alaj system.

Precipitation is decidedly scarce, amounting to 175 millimeters (7 inches) per year. Summer is the driest season.

The winter, from December to February, is cold, with an average January temperature of around 1 °C (34 °F).
During periods of stable weather, fog can form.
There are quite mild periods, during which the temperature can reach or exceed 10 °C (50 °F).
Due to the arid climate, both rain and snowfall are quite rare, and in any case generally not abundant.
During cold waves, the temperature can drop to -10 °C (14 °F) or below, although this doesn't happen every year. The coldest record is -22.8 °C (-9 °F), set in January 1969. In February 1972, the monthly average was -8 °C (17.5 °F).

Summer, from June to August, is very hot and sunny. The average in July is 29 °C (84 °F).
On the hottest days, the temperature reaches or exceeds 40 °C (104 °F), and occasionally reaches 42/43 °C (108/109 °F). In July 2019, the average maximum was 38.7 °C (101.7 °F).
