Climate chart - Dushanbe
The climate of Dushanbe is continental, with quite mild winters and very hot, sunny summers.
Dushanbe is a city of 865,000 inhabitants, located in the west of Tajikistan (of which it is the capital), and at 38 degrees north latitude. The altitude varies between 700 and 930 meters (2,300 and 3,050 feet). The center is at 780 meters (2,600 ft).
To the north are the Hisar Mountains (or Gissar), belonging to the western section of the Pamir-Alaj, whose highest peak, Khazret Sultan, on the border with Uzbekistan, reaches 4,643 meters (15,233 ft). Further north are the Fann Mountains, whose highest peak, Chimtarga, is 5,489 meters (18,008 ft) high. To the south, on the other hand, there are lower mountain ranges, reaching around 1,400 metres (4,600 ft).

Precipitation is moderate, amounting to about 620 millimeters (24.5 inches) per year, and due to its location at the foot of the mountains, it is more abundant than in other cities in Tajikistan, which are generally arid. Dushanbe is also rainier than the other Central Asian capitals.
The rainiest season is spring, due to the clashes of air masses typical of this season. Summer is by far the driest season.

Winter, from December to February, is quite mild during the day, although there are cold nights, during which the temperature often drops below freezing. The average temperature in January is around 4 °C (39 °F).
In periods of stable weather, fog can form.
The mountains to the north partly protect the city from cold waves, and rain is more frequent than snow.
There are quite mild periods, during which the temperature can reach or exceed 15 °C (59 °F), and sometimes even 20 °C (68 °F).
However, there can be cold periods, during which it can snow. In addition, there can be cold waves, during which the temperature can drop to -10 °C (14 °F ) or below. The coldest record is -26.6 °C (-15.9 °F), set in January 1934. More recently, a very cold month was January 2008, with a monthly daily average of -4.1 °C (24.6 °F). Since January 1973, however, the temperature has not dropped below -20 °C (-4 °F).

Summer, from June to August, is very hot and sunny. The average in July is 27.5 °C (81.5 °F).
On the hottest days of the year, the temperature exceeds 40 °C (104 °F).
The heat record is 45.3 °C (113.5 °F), set in July 2022. In July 2019, the average maximum was 39.7 °C (103.5 °F).
