The climate of Växjö is Baltic, that is, moderately continental, with cold winters, during which the average temperature is a few degrees below freezing, and mild summers.
The city is located in southern Sweden, at 170 meters (555 feet) above sea level, in the former province of Småland.
Given the latitude (56°53'N), the white nights, in which the sun sets but it does not get completely dark even at midnight, occur from May 26 to July 17.
In winter, during polar cold spells, the temperature can drop to -25 °C (-13 °F) or below. The coldest record is -32.6 °C (-26.7 °F) and was set in January 1942.
