The climate of Östersund is cold continental, with very cold winters, during which the temperature is often below freezing, and mild summers.
The city is situated in the central part of Sweden, 350 meters (1,150 ft) above sea level, near lake Storsjön.
Given the latitude (63°11'N), the white nights, in which the sun sets but it does not get completely dark even at midnight, occur from April 30 to August 12.
