Average weather, temperature, rainfall, sunshine hours
The climate of Omsk is
continental (according to the Köppen classification, humid continental climate with warm summer - Dfb), with cold winters, during which the temperature is normally below freezing, and relatively warm summers.
Omsk is a city of 1,150,000 inhabitants, the capital of the oblast' of the same name, located in the West Siberian Lowland, on the banks of the Irtysh River (a tributary of the Ob), along the Trans-Siberian Railway, and at 55 degrees north latitude.
Precipitation is not abundant, since it amounts to about 415 millimeters (16.5 inches) per year. In fact, due to the location east of the Urals and not far from the steppe of Central Asia, we are close to an arid area, which includes Kazakhstan, whose border is about 100 km (62 mi) to the south.
The rainiest season is summer.
Furthermore, due to the distance from all seas and the absence of obstacles for air masses, the climate is characterized by
temperature swings.
Winter, from November to March, is very cold: the average temperature in January is about -17 °C (1.5 °F). The sky is often cloudy, and light snow often falls. The ground is usually covered in snow.
During
cold spells, the temperature drops below -30 °C (-22 °F) every year, and once every few years below -40 °C (-40 °F). The record is -45.5 °C (-49.9 °F), set in January 1931.
In January 1969, the monthly daily average was -29.9 °C (-21.8 °F).
Summer, from June to August, is quite warm and sunny, even though rains and thunderstorms are quite frequent. The average in July is around 19.5 °C (67 °F).
Sometimes there can be
heatwaves, during which the temperature can reach and exceed 35 °C (95 °F). The record is 40.4 °C (104.7 °F), set in July 1940. More recently, the temperature reached 38.9 °C (102 °F) in July 2023.
In July 1989 and in July 1998, the average maximum was 29.8 °C (85.6 °F).
