Average weather, temperature, rainfall, sunshine hours
The climate of Krasnoyarsk is
continental (according to the Köppen classification, humid continental climate with warm summers - Dfb), with very cold winters, during which the temperature is normally below freezing, and warm summers.
Krasnoyarsk (also transliterated as Krasnoyarsk) is a city of 1,100,000 inhabitants, the second largest in Siberia, located in southern Siberia, along the Trans-Siberian Railway, on the banks of the Yenisei River (the longest in Russia), and at 56 degrees north latitude.
Krasnoyarsk Territory (Krai) spans a huge area that extends northward well beyond the Arctic Circle, to the Taymir Peninsula and the Severnaya Zemlya archipelago, in the Arctic Ocean.
In the vicinity of Krasnoyarsk there are hills, the first heights belonging to the
Eastern Sayan Mountains, whose highest peak in the Krasnoyarsk Territory, the
Grandiozny Peak, 2,690 meters (8,830 ft) high, is located 300 km (185 mi) to the southeast, while the highest peak of the whole chain,
Munku-Sardyk, 3,491 meters (11,453 ft) high, is located on the border with Mongolia, 700 km (435 mi) to the southeast of the city.
Precipitation is not abundant, since it amounts to about 505 millimeters (20 inches) per year.
The rainiest season is summer.
Furthermore, due to the distance from all seas and the absence of obstacles for air masses, the climate is characterized by
temperature swings.
Winter, from November to March, is very cold: the average temperature in January is about -15.5 °C (4 °F). The sky is often cloudy, and light snow often falls. The ground is usually covered in snow.
