The climate of Yaroslavl is
continental (according to the Köppen classification, humid continental climate with warm summers - Dfb), with very cold winters and relatively warm summers.
Yaroslavl is a city of 600,000 inhabitants, the capital of the homonymous oblast', located in European Russia, at the confluence of the Kotorosl and Volga rivers, at 57 degrees north latitude and 240 km (150 mi) northeast of Moscow.
About 70 km (45 mi) northwest is the Rybinsk Reservoir, an artificial lake built in 1935.
Precipitation is not abundant, since it amounts to about 600 millimeters (23.5 inches) per year. As often happens in cold climates, the rainiest season is summer.
Winter, from November to March, is very cold: the average temperature in January is around -8.5 °C (16.5 °F). The sky is often cloudy, and light snow often falls.
The ground is usually covered in snow, although there may be periods when the temperature rises above freezing, usually only slightly, and rain, drizzle or rain mixed with snow can occur.
During
cold spells, the temperature drops to around -25 °C (-13 °F) or below almost every year, and can sometimes drop below -30 °C (-22 °F).
Occasionally, in the past it has even dropped below -40 °C (-40 °F).
The coldest month was January 1987, with a daily average of -22.1 °C (-7.8 °F).
On the other hand, in the exceptionally mild winter of 2020, the temperature remained for long periods around or above freezing.
Summer, from June to August, is very mild or pleasantly warm, with an acceptable amount of sunshine, but also with fairly frequent rains and thunderstorms. The average in July is 19 °C (66 °F).
Sometimes there can be
hot periods in which the temperature exceeds 30 °C (86 °F), and sometimes even 35 °C (95 °F).
