Climate chart - Ufa
The climate of Ufa is continental, with cold winters, during which the temperature is normally below freezing, and warm summers.
Ufa, the capital of Bashkortostan, is a city of 1,100,000 inhabitants located in Eastern European Russia, at the confluence of the Belaya and Ufa rivers, at almost 55 degrees north latitude and 1,155 km (715 mi) east-southeast of Moscow.
To the east, at a not great distance, are the Ural Mountains, which separate European Russia from the Asian part, called Siberia. The mountains are not high and are irregular, however, in this southern part they reach a maximum of 1,640 meters (5,380 ft) in Mount Yamantau, the second peak of the Urals, which is located 140 km (85 mi) southeast of Ufa. On this mountain, the tree line, above which the summit becomes subarctic, is about 1,250 meters (4,000 ft).

Even though it is at about the same latitude, Ufa has a more continental climate than Moscow, as it is located further from the Atlantic Ocean and closer to Siberia.

Precipitation is not abundant, since it amounts to about 575 millimeters (22.5 inches) per year. The driest period is from February to April, while summer is the wettest season. Precipitation usually occurs in the form of snow from late October to early April. Instead, in late spring and summer it can occur in the form of thunderstorms.

Winter, from November to March, is very cold: the average temperature in January and February is about -12 °C (10.5 °F). The sky is often cloudy, and light snow often falls. The ground is usually covered in snow from about November 10 to April 10. In February and March, the average snow depth is about 40 cm (15.5 in).
During cold spells, the temperature drops below -30 °C (-22 °F) almost every year. It has also dropped below -40 °C (-40 °F) on occasion, although the last time this happened was in January 2006, with -41.8 °C (-43.2 °F). The coldest record is -48.5 °C (-55.3 °F), set in January 1979.
The previous record was -45.8 °C (-50.4 °F), set in January 1969. The latter has been the coldest month, with a monthly daily average of -28 °C (-18.5 °F).
